When Reason Departs

When reason departs,

And bitterness ossifies the mind,

What can be done?

Can conversation and rational points of deliberation animate the stone?

.

When passion blinds thought,

And the soul is given over lock and key to its natural proclivities,

What can be done?

Can any amount of philosophy bring light to the eye?

.

When hatred imprisons the will,

And subjects it to its dominion,

What can be done?

Can any amount of reasonable discourse set the captive free?

.

How can a blind and captive stone permeate with overflowing life, free and perceiving?

.

When the King of grace looms,

And tears down the self-made ramparts, proclaiming liberty to the captive,

What can be done?

Can any amount of reasonable discourse refuse him?

.

When the King of glory appears,

And reveals himself, enlightening the mind,

What can be done?

Can any amount of philosophy obscure the light which shines forth?

.

When the King of mercy approaches,

And breathes life into the stone, turning it to flesh,

What can be done?

Can any conversation or points of deliberation kill what the Spirit of life has animated?
